Chiropractic care for pregnant women

is important for prenatal and postpartum wellness. Treating women during pregnancy is one of the most rewarding parts of practice because a healthier pregnancy means an easier labor and delivery and a better transition for the baby into this life. Chiropractic care is safe through out pregnancy. Treatment can result in easier pregnancy, decreased labor time and assist new mothers back to prepartum health.

Throughout pregnancy there are postural changes with the weight of the baby. This weight can place pressure on the spine, pelvis, nerves and arteries. As the woman’s body changes, pelvic/sacral misalignments can cause tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. Chiropractic pregnancy care can help decrease or eliminate pain that can accompany pregnancy.

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. It can help remove the restriction and allow biomechanical balance in the pelvic structure, muscles and ligaments.

The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral/pelvic subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. Sacral misalignment may contribute to these primary causes of dystocia (difficult labor) via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments.

The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation.

The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia. It is recommended to use this technique throughout the pregnancy which can allow the baby to drop into the pelvic basin. This will allow a much easier birth process.

Even after seeking Chiropractic care during pregnancy, it also is known to have a positive effect on children as well. Please read more on this on our Children page.

Another topic that often comes up with expecting mothers is the cost.  Is there a higher pregnancy chiropractor cost compared to non-pregnancy chiropractic care. The good news is no, there is not an additional cost for providing chiropractic care to expecting mothers.
